Mumbai: The General Arun Kumar Vaidya Swimming Pool in Chembur, which was shut for about two months due to leakages, will reopen to the public on Tuesday. The pool had been closed since mid-April owing to the leakage issue. The closure affected many patrons, including regular swimmers. “The pool has more than 5,000 members and is used by a large number of citizens in Chembur and the surrounding areas of the eastern suburbs. Opening of the pool is a welcome move,” said Anil Galgali, who had highlighted the issue and complained to the authorities.Earlier, on June 9, BMC Additional Commissioner Avinash Dhakne carried out an inspection of the pool, which was constructed in 2018, and issued instructions to the civic administration.BMC M-West Ward Officer Shankar Bhosale said the Garden Department had carried out the necessary works and the leakages had been arrested. “The pool will be open for public use as it was earlier. As per the instructions of Additional Commissioner Avinash Dhakne, we will carry out beautification of the swimming pool premises, including installing polycarbonate sheets over the viewing gallery roof and creating a new entrance board for the pool. Marking of lanes to dedicate parking spaces for members within the pool premises and improvements in the garden, including the planting of trees, which will provide shade, will also be carried out,” said Bhosale.“Besides, the ward will also create composting pits in the garden and maintain the pay-and-park facility near the pool. All discarded and scrapped material within the pool premises will be disposed of,” Bhosale added.
