Patna: CM Samrat Choudhary on Monday asked officials to prepare a groundwater policy at the earliest to ensure conservation, effective management and sustainable use of Bihar’s groundwater resources.Chairing a review meeting of the minor water resources department at Sankalp Sabhagar in Lok Sevak Awas, Samrat stressed the need for a strong institutional framework involving coordinated efforts by all departments concerned.Highlighting growing water demand and future challenges, he asked officials to expedite work on the proposed Bihar Groundwater Management and Regulation Act, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to regulate groundwater extraction, prevent overuse and promote balanced utilisation of water resources.The CM said the department’s responsibilities should extend beyond creating new assets and include proper maintenance and efficient management of existing infrastructure. He also called for greater emphasis on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and water conservation initiatives.Samrat underlined the need for scientific and technical interventions to improve groundwater levels and said protecting water resources and ensuring water security for future generations remained among the Bihar govt’s key priorities.
