Divy Khare | TNNBokaro: Police have busted an inter-state chain-snatching gang active across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, arresting five members in separate operations and recovering stolen property, cash and a motorcycle used in the crimes.The crackdown followed a series of chain-snatching incidents targeting women in crowded market areas in recent times, following which Bokaro SP Nathu Singh Meena constituted three Special Investigation Teams (SITs).The probe gained momentum after two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a gold chain from a woman near Laxmi Market under Sector-4 police station limits on June 23.“Following sustained technical surveillance and human intelligence inputs, SIT arrested one of the key accused, Bhola Das (30) of Jajpur district in Odisha, on July 1. During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in multiple chain-snatching incidents, including the Laxmi Market case,” Meena said on Thursday.According to police, Das admitted involvement in at least seven similar crimes since May-June this year in Dumri, Bermo, Isri Bazaar, IEL area of Bokaro, and Ramgarh districts.In a parallel operation, police arrested four more gang members in Chas after investigating a June 30 chain-snatching case near a hotel, where a woman’s gold locket was snatched.Police recovered a gold-like locket, a numberless motorcycle, Rs 48,000 in cash, a keypad mobile phone and vehicle keys. The accused also allegedly confessed to a chain-snatching incident near a cloth store on June 25.The four arrested were identified as Rana alias Rajneesh Singh (18), Bittu Kumar Singh (24), Shravan Sinha (18) and Parmanand Kumar Verma (52), all from Dhanbad district and adjoining areas. Police said several of them have criminal records in Jharkhand and Bengal.“The gang was active across inter-state routes and targeted women in crowded marketplaces. Further investigation is underway to identify additional links in the network,” the SP said.
