CM orders probe after pensioner’s death over bank row

Garhwa: CM Hemant Soren on Tuesday ordered a probe after 75-year-old Ratan Lakra allegedly died in Garhwa district following repeated failed attempts to withdraw his pension for treatment.Lakra’s family said he visited a rural bank’s branch at Badgadh for three months but was denied payment because his e-KYC process was not completed. His daughter-in-law, Phulmani Lakra, said the family asked the bank’s regional manager to complete the process so Lakra could use the money for medical care. She claimed the e-KYC was eventually completed after intervention, but the pension still could not be withdrawn before Lakra died on Monday. The bank denied there was any post-e-KYC withdrawal attempt.Villagers and relatives of Lakra staged a sit-in outside the bank with his body, accusing staff of negligence and demanding action against branch manager Krishna Kumar and messenger Hemant Kumar.Police reached the spot to pacify protesters. The dharna ended after the regional manager assured an inquiry.Garhwa deputy commissioner Pashupati Nath Mishra formed a probe team led by Ranka SDM Md Parvez and LDM Satyadeo Ranjan. He said strict action and due assistance would follow after the inquiry report comes.(With PTI inputs)
