Ranchi: A 27-year-old man was allegedly lynched by a mob in Jamshedpur’s Parsudih after being suspected of stealing a motorcycle, police said. Four persons have been arrested and a juvenile detained in connection with the killing, while raids are on to nab the remaining accused.The victim, Rohit Munda, was allegedly beaten with sticks, bamboo poles and wooden planks in Sarjamda Basti under Parsudih police station limits in the early hours of Thursday.Police said Rohit had attended a party with friends in Salgajhuri on Wednesday night. Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, he mistakenly rode home on another person’s motorcycle, a sequence that was later confirmed through CCTV footage. When the motorcycle owner discovered the vehicle missing, he suspected Rohit of theft and, along with his associates, confronted him. The argument soon escalated into a violent assault.According to police, Rohit repeatedly pleaded for mercy as the attackers continued beating him until he lost consciousness. The assailants fled after local residents began gathering. His mother, Putul Kalindi, brought the critically injured Rohit home and gave him water, but he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.Police recovered the body and sent it to MGM Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. Investigators are awaiting the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death.Deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Sumit Kumar said on Friday that the arrested accused were identified as Sujal Lohar, Haripado Machhua, Sameer Munda and Ravi Yadav, aged between 22 and 30, besides a juvenile. The four adults were remanded to judicial custody, while the juvenile was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.Police said nearly 20 people were allegedly involved in the assault, and raids are under way to arrest the remaining suspects. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings.
