Kolkata: A baby shower in south Kolkata allegedly turned violent after a group of intoxicated neighbours attacked the host, his pregnant wife, and other family members around 11.30 pm on Sunday.The incident occurred after a minor football argument and a demand for money at the residence of Sunil Kandi in Kalikapur Purbapally, under Survey Park Police Station.According to a complaint filed by Kandi, the family was celebrating a baby shower for his wife when a group of locals, identified as Sanjoy Sardar, Bhole Sardar, Puja Sikdar, and several unknown associates, allegedly began abusing Kandi’s brother-in-law, Amit Dey, without provocation. The accused were allegedly drunk at the time.The family said the argument began over football banter. Kandi’s wife said Dey was serving water to the guests and had gone to get ice from the refrigerator. A window near the refrigerator faced the neighbours’ window, from where the accused allegedly started making abusive remarks. They reportedly told Dey that they would throw him out, just as Argentina would defeat Spain in football later that night.When Dey stepped outside to arrange an app-based bike ride for a relative, five accused persons allegedly ganged up and assaulted him. Hearing his screams, Kandi’s mother rushed out, but she was also allegedly pushed and beaten.During the scuffle, Kandi suffered a serious leg injury, which doctors suspect may be a fracture. The family alleged that the attackers demanded Rs 5,000 to stop the assault. They also claimed that a woman, accused in the case, abused and assaulted Kandi’s mother-in-law and brother, Anil. Kandi’s wife and mother were also allegedly molested. The accused allegedly threatened to kill the family members before leaving. Three persons were injured in the incident.Survey Park Police have registered an FIR against Puja Sikdar, Bhole Sardar, Sanjoy Sardar, and two others.
