Patna: A day after violent protests over the alleged NEET paper leak rocked parts of the city, Patna Police launched a massive crackdown, registering 20 FIRs, arresting 56 people and identifying 177 suspects through video footage. Police have also released photographs of alleged rioters and intensified raids to track down those involved in stone-pelting, vandalism and attacks on security personnel.Police Headquarters cancelled all kinds of leave for police personnel across the state from July 24 until further orders, citing special law and order arrangements. The order, issued on Thursday by the additional director general (law and order) K Suhita Anupam, stated that leave only be allowed under exceptional circumstances. All senior police officers were directed to ensure strict compliance with the directive, which was approved by the DGP, Bihar.According to police, during the July 22 protests near Gandhi Maidan and Income Tax Roundabout, unruly elements attacked police personnel, damaged police vehicles and public property, and assaulted members of the public and media personnel with sticks, iron rods, bricks and stones.Police said suspects are being identified through CCTV footage and other digital evidence. Citizens have been urged to identify individuals shown in the photographs, based on the serial numbers assigned to them, and share information through the police helpline to facilitate legal action.SSP Kartikeya K Sharma said investigators were examining whether the stones used during the violence had been brought to the protest site or picked up from nearby areas. “We are analysing CCTV footage and video recordings to establish how the incident unfolded and identify those involved,” he said, adding that stringent legal action would be taken against all offenders.Cyber Crime and Security Unit (CCSU) is analysing nearly 100 additional videos. CCTV footage, drone recordings and smartphone videos are also being scrutinised to identify more people involved in the violence. Investigators are further examining viral social media posts, videos and messages, and monitoring the activities of certain YouTubers and social media content creators to determine whether anyone instigated the unrest.ASP (law and order-I) Krishna Murari Prasad said three FIRs were registered at Kotwali police station on the statements of magistrates. “A total of 56 people have been arrested and produced before court. In the Kotwali case, 85 accused have been named, while around 1,000 others remain unidentified. Apart from government FIRs, 10 separate cases have been registered in connection with damage to public and private property, including vehicles,” he said.Secretariat SHO Gautam Kumar said three FIRs had been lodged against 88 named accused, while a large number of unidentified persons had also been booked. He said investigators were relying on CCTV footage and other digital evidence to identify every person involved. So far, one accused has been arrested.Gandhi Maidan SHO Akhilesh Kumar Mishra said 95 accused had been named in the case, while around 500 unidentified persons had also been booked. Ten people have been arrested so far. He added that efforts to identify more suspects using CCTV footage and technical evidence were continuing.Police said the violence erupted after protesters allegedly tried to enter a prohibited area, broke barricades and hurled stones at security personnel, damaging several government vehicles. Additional forces were deployed to restore order.
