Ranchi: Ordering stringent action against illegal liquor production, transportation, sale and smuggling, chief minister Hemant Soren on Friday said illicit liquor causes revenue loss and threatens the lives and health of consumers.At a review meeting, officials said the department exceeded its 2025-26 revenue target, collecting Rs 4,013.53 crore against Rs 3,885.11 crore. For 2026-27, the target is Rs 4,500 crore, of which Rs 1,376 crore (30.57%) was collected till mid-July.Hemant asked officials to prioritise engaging tribal communities in constructing excise warehouses to strengthen the rural economy and boost employment. He also directed greater use of technology in inspection and monitoring of excise units.“Liquor transport vehicles operated by the department must be equipped with GPS tracking and digital locks to enable real-time monitoring and provide accurate information about their routes, stoppages and destinations. The use of technology in transport vehicles would enhance transparency and help establish effective control over illegal activities,” the CM said.Reviewing vacancies, he instructed officials to complete formalities quickly and recruit for various posts through the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).“Availability of adequate and competent human resources is essential for the effective implementation of the department’s schemes and responsibilities. Vacancies should not affect the department’s functioning at any level, and adequate staffing would improve administrative efficiency, strengthen the monitoring mechanism and ensure the effective implementation of policies and schemes related to excise and prohibition,” he added.Officials said issuing of appointment letters for 583 excise constables selected through the JSSC is in the final stages.
