Jamshedpur: The Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC) on Friday launched an intensive sanitation drive to clear garbage from streets, remove drain blockages and improve cleanliness across the town ahead of the peak monsoon season.Mayor Sudha Gupta said the campaign will run in day and night shifts to speed up cleaning in all 32 municipal wards. To streamline operations, Mango has been divided into three zones. Zone one covers Kunwar Basti to Tezab Nala; zone 2 stretches from Jawaharnagar Deshbandhu Line to Mayak Mrinal Hospital; and zone 3 includes Shantinagar to Kharia Basti.The civic body has prioritised cleaning and desilting major drains in Jawaharnagar, Old Purulia Road, New Purulia Road, Dimna Road and Payal Cinema Road. Officials said the work will include removal of silt and debris from major and minor drains, repairs to damaged sections, and measures to ensure smooth rainwater flow to prevent waterlogging.On Gupta’s directions, MMC has engaged Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TSUISL) to support the campaign. The utility company has deployed modern heavy machinery for large-scale drain cleaning and desilting operations.However, several residents expressed dissatisfaction over the delayed start of the exercise. “With almost daily rainfall over the past two weeks, many drains in low-lying areas have overflowed due to severe clogging. The sanitation drive should have begun at least a month before the monsoon,” said Umesh Thakur, a resident of Payal Cinema Road.Mango, one of the region’s most densely populated urban centres, has around 3.25 lakh residents and generates nearly 52 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily from its 33 wards. About 30 Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) are deployed every day for waste collection and transportation.The corporation said the special exercise is intended to supplement routine solid-waste lifting and reduce the risk of overflowing drains in congested neighbourhoods as rainfall intensifies. Teams have been instructed to clear roadside garbage, drain mouths and vulnerable stretches on priority without delay.
