Ranchi: Dr Ramdayal Munda Tribal Welfare Research Institute (TRI) has received a total of nine applications from tribal communities for next year’s Padma awards. Speaking on the submissions, TRI director Alok Shikari Kachhap said, “Most applicants belong to the fields of art, literature and culture.”He added that an internal committee will soon be set up to evaluate the applications against prescribed parameters, which will then be followed by detailed documentation and police verification. “Once the review process is complete, applications of shortlisted candidates will be uploaded onto the awards portal,” Kachhap said.On the directive of the Union ministry of tribal affairs, applications were invited until July 20 at TRI to identify deserving individuals from tribal communities.

The primary objective of the awards is to honour unsung heroes, outstanding individuals whose selfless contributions, particularly in preserving traditional knowledge systems, reviving vanishing tribal arts and promoting regional languages and literacy, have created a profound societal impact without public recognition.Under the selection guidelines, the criterion of ‘Excellence Plus,’ combining excellence with dedicated public service, will be applied, with priority given to those operating independently of govt assistance.The guidelines also mandate special efforts to ensure representation for women, weaker sections of society, SCs, STs and persons with disabilities. Also, candidates must not have pending criminal cases, and all nominations require verifiable documents with independent evidence.Posthumous awards will remain restricted to exceptionally rare and deserving cases where the demise occurred within one year before Jan 26, 2027.
