Kolkata: A 26-year-old woman, Reshmi Das, was arrested for allegedly killing her husband, Amit Das, after a quarrel as he failed to bring momos and skipped a visit to an Ulto Rath fair in north Kolkata’s Chitpore area on Saturday. According to a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, Reshmi kicked and punched Amit on his chest, leaving him injured.The incident took place at Camp Bagan on Sarbakhan Road in Chitpore.According to police, the victim, Amit Das, was an app-bike rider. As he collapsed after the alleged assault, he was rushed to RG Kar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.The body has been sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for postmortem, with investigators awaiting the final report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police said the couple had been married for eight years and lived in a tiled-roof house with their seven-year-old son and Das’s 60-year-old mother, Kajal. Police said the couple’s son witnessed the incident. He has provided investigators with details of what transpired on Friday night, cops said. According to the complaint registered by the victim’s mother, the couple had been arguing since Friday over not visiting the fair. The dispute allegedly escalated later in the night.The accused had asked Das to buy momos while he was returning from work. When he returned without the food, another altercation broke out between the two and she allegedly kicked him on the chest.The victim’s sister, Jhuma Mondal, alleged that her brother had often been subjected to physical assault and was pressured over money. She claimed Das, who earned a modest living as an app-bike rider, struggled to support the family and that the couple frequently fought over financial challenges.A local resident, Tanmoy Adhikari, said he had received a phone call from a neighbour around 3.30 am, informing him that Amit had collapsed. “When I reached, he was lying on the floor and groaning in pain. Reshmi’s father had already arrived with a car. We took Amit to RG Kar Hospital, where he was admitted after a medical examination was conducted on him. Around 4.30 am, we were informed that Amit had died,” he said.Soon after the incident, Reshmi’s father brought her back to the neighbourhood. This led to an outrage among local residents, who were irked over the incident and allegedly assaulted her before handing her over to police. Reshmi was later arrested, police said.The victim’s mother, Kajal Das, said she had repeatedly advised the couple to live separately if their relationship had turned sour. “I worked as a domestic help to support the family. I had advised them to get separated many a times had they found it difficult to live together. Had they listened, perhaps my son would still have been alive,” she rued.
