Mumbai: The state minority development department has issued an advisory to minority educational institutions in the state against asking minority students for a minority certificate at the time of admission to minority educational institutions.“There were complaints against some minority-managed educational institutions insisting on seeing the minority certificates from students who seek admission in minority quota. It is a welcome move, which will stop unnecessary harassment to students,” said Bal Malkit Singh, executive chairperson, Maharashtra State Punjabi Sahitya Academy.This is the reiteration of the govt’s earlier notifications on July 1, 2013, and Jan 10, 2017. Despite these notifications, some educational institutions continued to insist on the submission of a minority certificate, causing unnecessary hardship to students and their parents.Javed Shroff, chairperson of Habib Trust, which also runs educational institutions besides a hospital, said that this advisory will help bring transparency and save students and parents from harassment.
