Kolkata: Heavy rains lashed parts of south and central Kolkata leading to waterlogging in areas like Chetla, Kalighat, Alipore, New Alipore, Park Circus, Jadavpur and Southern Avenue on Monday. The rain, triggered by ‘local factors’, was accompanied by frequent lightning strikes.Kolkata recorded 86.2 mm of rain on Monday, making it the second rainiest day this monsoon. On June 26, the city had received 89 mm of rain – the highest single-day rain so far this year. “Local heating and heavy moisture incursion caused the heavy shower in southern parts of the city,” said Sourish Bandyopadhyay, weather scientist, RMC.Heavy rain left several parts of south Kolkata including Kasba, Jodhpur Park, Jadavpur, Lake Gardens and some areas like Anandapur and Mukundapur waterlogged. Traffic personnel were deployed to clear drainage blockages and manage traffic flow. Despite the rain, Kolkata’s maximum temperature clocked 34.4°C. The mercury may slide by a degree on Tuesday. Met predicted that south Bengal and Kolkata will experience scattered light-to-moderate rain and intermittent thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds over the next two days. Heavy rainfall warnings apply around Aug 6–7 in districts such as South 24 Parganas, East/West Midnapore, Bankura, Birbhum and Burdwan.
