Jamshedpur: Protests erupted in Burmamines on Tuesday after Aftab Alam, 37, who campaigned against drug peddling, died from gunshot injuries at a Kolkata hospital.Residents burnt tyres, blocked the Burmamines-Tatanagar railway station road for several hours and gheraoed Burmamines police station, demanding the arrest of all those involved.Police said six masked men riding two motorcycles attacked Aftab inside the FCI container yard on Sunday evening. Aftab was with three friends when the assailants allegedly threatened them before firing several rounds. The attackers fled after his friends hurled stones at them.Aftab, who suffered four bullet wounds, was taken to Tata Main Hospital and later shifted to Kolkata, where he died early Tuesday.His friends said he had organised an anti-drug awareness rally on Aug 1.SP (city) Lalit Meena said Md Samad, previously jailed under the NDPS Act, and Kulsum Biwi were arrested from Carriage Colony on Monday. Eleven people have been named as accused. Police are investigating possible business rivalry and links to a drug syndicate.
