IGIMS to launch liver transplant services soon

Patna: IGIMS is preparing to launch liver transplant services shortly, its director Dr Bindey Kumar said on Monday, as the institute stepped up efforts to strengthen organ and cornea retrieval in Bihar. The announcement came at a symposium on organ and eye donation organised by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) at IGIMS.The symposium, titled “A dialogue: Organ & Eye Donation – Bihar Today and Future”, brought together three Padma Shri awardees — Surat-based Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandlewala, Dadhichi Dehdan Samiti general secretary Vimal Jain and AIIMS Gorakhpur chairman Dr Hemant Kumar — to draft a roadmap for improving donor pledges across the state.Former governor of Sikkim and Meghalaya Ganga Prasad and Dr Bindey Kumar inaugurated the session.Mandlewala stressed the need to dispel myths surrounding brain death. “Brain death is clinical death where life support merely maintains circulation. A single family’s consent at this crucial moment can save six to eight lives,” he said.Dr Hemant Kumar urged medical students to take organ donor pledges, while RIO head Dr Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha encouraged youth to use social media to promote the cause.
