Thane: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Thane police has initiated a detailed investigation into a multi-crore investment scam involving a private firm, with its directors and managers accused of duping investors of over Rs 4.3 crore. The offence pertains to an alleged fraudulent operation run from an office on Gokhale Road, where unsuspecting citizens were targeted between 2017 and 2022.According to police officials, the firm attracted investors by offering lucrative returns through fixed deposit schemes and specialised monthly investment plans. Investors were allegedly promised that their money would double within a few years or fetch unusually high interest over periods ranging from two to 10 years. “The scam came to light after a 59-year-old Panvel resident lodged a complaint stating that he invested nearly Rs 25 lakh in the firm’s schemes. However, upon maturity, neither the principal amount nor the promised returns were paid. A preliminary probe revealed that multiple investors were similarly defrauded,” said a police official. Officials said EOW is now conducting a comprehensive probe to trace the diverted funds, examine financial transactions, and identify additional victims.
