Ranchi Police Launch Database for School Van Drivers to Enhance Child Safety

Ranchi: A day after a 22-year-old school van driver was arrested for allegedly molesting a 3-year-old girl, SSP Rakesh Ranjan has directed all officers in-charge of police stations across Ranchi district to compile a comprehensive database of school van drivers and vehicle owners to enhance the safety of children.SSP Ranjan told TOI that a directive has been issued to all OCs to prepare a database of all relevant information of school van and bus drivers.“The database will include details of all vehicles transporting students in the city. Names and contact details of the drivers and owners of vehicles will be included in the database. Police will also check whether police verification of drivers has been completed or not,” Ranjan said, adding that the move comes as part of a broader effort to prevent crimes against students and strengthen monitoring of school transport systems.Ranjan added that police have urged school authorities to install CCTV cameras inside school vans and buses and GPS trackers to record all happenings inside the vehicles.“We have talked to the school authorities about whether CCTV and GPS trackers can be installed in the vehicle. Officers in-charge have been directed to give a comprehensive report of the status of the vehicles used in transporting students by Friday evening,” he added.Ranjan further said that Wednesday’s incident could leave a trauma on the child’s psyche and “police will prevent the occurrence of these kinds of incidents at any cost”.
