Kolkata: Police have launched a criminal investigation into the death of a woman whose body was recovered from her matrimonial residence in the Anandapur area on Aug 20. Following a formal complaint lodged by the deceased’s mother, cops registered a case at the Anandapur Police Station against the victim’s husband under sections 85 and 108 of BNS, which relate to domestic cruelty and abetment of suicide.According to cops, the couple married in Aug 2021. However, the complainant alleged that her daughter was subjected to physical and mental torture beginning 18 months after the wedding, and repeatedly assaulted “for not being able to bear a child”. The victim had been driven out of her matrimonial home in late 2024 after refusing to consent to a divorce, prompting her to seek legal protection under the Domestic Violence Act. Although a court granted her a residence order, allowing her to return to the matrimonial house in early 2026, the complainant alleged that necessities, like food and water, were temporarily withheld upon her return. This had led to police complaints.The situation deteriorated following a medical appointment on Aug 19, when a gynaecological examination confirmed a negative pregnancy. Police said an intense altercation ensued, during which the suspect allegedly engaged in severe verbal abuse and repeatedly urged the victim to end her life.On Aug 20, the victim remained locked inside a room at the VIP Nagar residence from morning until late afternoon. Her body was recovered around 6 pm. The victim’s family alleged that her husband failed to inform them about the emergency, leading to a brief delay in lodging the police complaint while the family coped with trauma.Officers confirmed that Anandapur Police have initiated a probe into the incident, including collecting medical records and witness testimonies, to document the history of physical abuse, coercion, and psychological pressure.
