Patna: Ahead of the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, security has been tightened in the border district of Kishanganj, with Bihar Police setting up 10 mirror checkpoints to prevent any untoward incident.Superintendent of police (SP) Santosh Kumar on Saturday said the checkpoints have been established to curb illegal infiltration, arms smuggling and the movement of anti-social elements during the election period. Vehicles and individuals are being subjected to thorough verification, including document checks and searches of suspicious persons.
A special alert has been sounded across all border areas, particularly in areas of five police stations—Pothia, Paharkatta, Kishanganj, Galgaliya and Thakurganj—which share borders with West Bengal. The SP directed police personnel to maintain close surveillance in these sensitive zones and ensure swift action on inputs shared by West Bengal Police.“Strict vigilance is being maintained on the movement of visitors in border areas, and any suspicious activity will be dealt with promptly,” Kumar said, adding that negligence on duty will not be tolerated.Security has also been strengthened along the India-Nepal border. During a crime review meeting with station house officers, the SP ordered intensified patrolling, more effective checking and heightened vigil in border belts. He also directed police to conduct intensive searches of hotels, lodges and guest houses in the district.Police personnel across all police stations have been briefed to remain extra alert. The SP appealed to officers to perform their duties with utmost vigilance and seek public cooperation to further strengthen security arrangements during the election period.
