Jamshedpur: A 28-year-old man was swept away by strong currents while bathing near Chotabanki check dam in Seraikela-Kharsawan district as incessant rain and the release of excess water from reservoirs disrupted life, flooded low-lying areas and damaged houses across Kolhan on Tuesday.The deceased was identified as Pradyuman Pradhan of Chotabanki village. Rajnagar police launched a search operation to trace him.In Jamshedpur, locals rescued 22-year-old Imtiaz after he was swept away by gushing drain water near Zakir pool in Jawaharnagar under Mango.Rain also damaged houses in rural areas. A wall of the mud house of zila parishad member Rani Majhi collapsed at Tangrain village in East Singhbhum’s Potka block after being weakened by continuous rain. Though no one was injured, a motorcycle and other belongings were damaged.“The Potka circle officer and block development officer have been informed so that appropriate compensation can be provided,” Majhi said.A portion of another rain-soaked mud house collapsed early Tuesday at Sarjamhatu village under Sonua police station limits in West Singhbhum. No casualty was reported.Flooding and waterlogging were reported in several low-lying localities along Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers. Floodwaters entered more than 150 houses in Naya Basti and Baroda Ghat in Bagbera. Houses in Bagunhatu, Babudih, Ramnagar and Shastrinagar were also inundated.Acting on East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan’s directions, municipal officials were monitoring vulnerable areas. Officials said the Subarnarekha and Kharkai were flowing 1.30 metres and 4.10 metres above their respective danger marks.The district recorded 81.4 mm of rainfall between Monday morning and Tuesday evening. More rain has been forecast.
