Bokaro: A 70-year-old visually impaired man was killed and his 65-year-old wife critically injured after a lone male elephant attacked them in Mandardih village in Giridih district late Tuesday.Giridih divisional forest officer Manish Tiwari said the elephant had separated from a herd of around 30 that entered Giridih from Dhanbad’s Tundi area.The tusker damaged the house of Mangra Manjhi before attacking him and his wife, Badki Devi. Mangra was declared dead on arrival at Giridih Sadar Hospital, while Badki is undergoing treatment.According to the couple’s grandson, Manish Soren, Badki had taken Mangra outside to answer the call of nature when the elephant suddenly appeared. Mangra, who was unable to see, was being accompanied by his wife when the attack took place.Tiwari said the forest department was trying to reunite the tusker with its herd, which is still wandering in the area. A forest team has been deployed nearby, while monitoring has been intensified to prevent further attacks and alert residents after the late-night incident.Officials have advised villagers to avoid venturing outdoors at night and to remain cautious until the elephant is safely reunited with the herd.
