Grand preparations underway for Buddha Purnima in Bodh Gaya

Gaya: Preparations are in full swing for the grand observance of the 2570th Buddha Purnima in Bodh Gaya on May 1.Buddha Purnima marks the thrice-blessed occasion—the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Prince Siddhartha—who came to be known as the Buddha after attaining enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree at the Mahabodhi Mahavihara.BTMC member secretary Mahashweta Maharathi said, “The revered premises of the Unesco world heritage Mahavihara are being decorated with colourful Panchsheel (Buddhist) flags, especially around the Bodhi tree. Cleanliness and beautification drives are also underway, lending a spiritual and festive ambience to the entire premise.”She added that thousands of Buddhist devotees and tourists from across the country and abroad are expected to assembly under the Bodhi tree to offer prayers, meditate and participate in ceremonies commemorating the life and teachings of the Buddha.Apart from the BTMC, the Gaya district administration has made elaborate arrangements, including free transportation for devotees from Gaya railway station to Bodh Gaya, medical camps, accommodation, food and tight security.The celebrations will begin with special prayers before the Buddha statue in the sanctum sanctorum of the Mahavihara, followed by a procession starting from the 80-ft Buddha statue.
