Mumbai: The BMC has imposed a Rs 1 crore penalty on the contractor carrying out flyover work at the T-junction near Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd for safety lapses that led to the toppling of a piling rig on Tuesday night, claiming the life of a police constable. Civic officials said that the parts of the piling rig which were overhanging on the road, had been cleared on Thursday evening.According to civic officials, preliminary investigations had revealed safety lapses on the part of the contractor, resulting in the accident. The BMC is carrying out construction of a flyover at the T-Junction intersection on the Sion Panvel Highway, and a piling rig deployed for the work, toppled at the work site late on Tuesday night. Civic officials pointed out that irrespective of the penal action, work on the project will continue.Following the incident, work was underway to remove the rig and also an overhanging portion of the piling rig machine, which had toppled over the barricades put up at the site of the accident. The work continued till Thursday evening and portions of the rig were removed, said civic officials.A 48-year-old police constable attached to Nehru Nagar police station had died in the accident and the Mankhurd police had registered an offence against officials of the construction firm.
