Schools in Tamil Nadu told to gear up for peak summer, keep ORS packets & first-aid ready

Chennai: In the coming month, schools in the state have been instructed to stock up on oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets and first-aid kits, and ensure adequate supply of water for students and staff to battle summer heat.In a circular to all chief education officers, the education department said that all schools must keep water storage systems ready. The circular also called for avoiding the usage of open spaces, which are exposed to direct sunlight, between noon and 3pm. “During these hours, classes, games or physical exercises for students must not be conducted in open spaces. Water containers for birds may be arranged on trees or selected places,” the circular read.School education director S Kannappan said instructions were issued a month ahead of reopening to give time for schools to prepare themselves. “We have asked schools to let students drink water at the beginning of every period, following water bells and other initiatives launched last year. Teachers should also encourage students to frequently consume seasonal fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in water content, such as watermelon, musk melon, oranges, grapes, pineapple, cucumber, greens and vegetables to keep themselves hydrated,” he added. The circular also detailed guidelines for parents—from the use of light-coloured cotton clothes for their wards to setting curfews to prevent their wards from spending excessive time outside. “Daily weather updates must be followed through radio, television and newspapers. Weather information can also be obtained from the India Meteorological Department website and its press releases,” the circular read.
