16k convicted through speedy trials in May

Patna: A total of 16,136 accused were convicted in 12,166 cases through speedy trials across Bihar in May 2026, reflecting the state’s continued push to strengthen law and order, additional director general of police (law and order) Sudhanshu Kumar said on Monday.Addressing a press conference at police headquarters, Sudhanshu said the convictions covered offences including murder, Arms Act violations, loot, dacoity, rape and Pocso cases. Of those convicted, 100 were awarded life imprisonment, while 44 received jail terms exceeding 10 years.He said 114 people were convicted in 52 murder cases, 61 in 37 Arms Act cases, 65 in 50 rape and POCSO cases, and 28 in 19 loot and dacoity cases.Between May 16 and June 20, police arrested 195 people, including four in a communal violence case, three for celebratory firing and 187 for attacks on police personnel.Sudhanshu said police also realised Rs 1 crore in fines from 8,604 vehicles violating traffic rules. During the period, 86,308 vehicles were checked, 91 seized and 819 people arrested. Police also seized 16 firearms, 49 live cartridges and substantial quantities of narcotics.
