Gumla: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Monday directed Gumla deputy commissioner (DC) Dileshwar Mahto to probe the case of a critically ill man after images of his wife seeking financial help on the streets for his treatment came to his notice via social media. The video showed Rohini Kujur, wife of a migrant worker, Jagarnath Tirkey, holding a handwritten placard and appealing to passers-by for money at Gumla Sadar Hospital. Taking cognisance, Soren on X instructed the DC to inquire into the matter and ensure proper medical care for the patient.Jagarnath, a resident of Katasaru Jokhar village and the sole breadwinner of his family, has been undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital for a severe illness, later identified as liver cirrhosis. His family was struggling to arrange funds for diagnostic tests, including a CT scan, due to the absence of a ration card and Ayushman Bharat health card.“Since we have no ration card, we are unable to pay the charge for a CT scan. So, I went out seeking help,” said Rohini, sitting beside her ailing husband. She was reportedly unaware of hospital authorities whom she could approach for assistance.Acting on the chief minister’s directive, the DC visited the hospital along with Additional Collector, Civil Surgeon Dr Shambhu Singh and Deputy Superintendent Dr Anupam Kishore. He directed officials to ensure proper treatment for Tirkey.“The treatment is underway and his condition has shown some improvement. Instructions have been given to issue him a ration card on urgent grounds, following which his Ayushman card will also be made,” the DC told TOI. He added that the CT scan would be conducted free of cost.Hospital authorities clarified that the patient is receiving treatment as per protocol. “He is being treated for liver cirrhosis. His Ayushman card will be processed and financial help will also be extended if needed,” civil surgeon Dr Chowdhury said. Officials also noted that the CT scan could not be conducted earlier as it was Sunday.
