RANCHI: JLKM leader Devendra Nath Mahto was admitted to a hospital on Monday after his health deteriorated on the ninth day of his hunger strike over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment examinations.Mahto’s condition was described as critical after his blood sugar level dropped drastically, doctors said. He was admitted to the emergency ward of Ranchi Sadar Hospital for treatment.“He is being treated in the emergency ward,” Nancy Priya, medical officer at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, told news agency PTI.Mahto had joined a march by students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations when his condition worsened, following which he was taken to the hospital.His aide, Pankaj Kumar, claimed that Mahto was injured during a police lathi-charge near the Jharkhand assembly.The protest turned tense near the assembly on Monday, with police using water cannons, tear gas and lathi-charge to disperse job aspirants. Several protesters and four policemen were injured in the clash, officials said.The protesters have been demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted in Jharkhand.
