Ranchi: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday reviewed the progress of Jharkhand’s GIS-based Urban Management System project, stressing timely execution and its role in ushering in transparent, data-driven urban governance. The project, being implemented by JUIDCO under the urban development and housing department, aims to modernise civic administration across 49 urban local bodies. Officials said that Ranchi, Dhanbad and Giridih municipal corporations were taken up as pilot cities, where aerial LiDAR surveys have already been completed.Digital mapping, creation of GIS layers and data processing are currently underway. The system will include geo-tagged property surveys and detailed mapping of urban assets such as buildings, roads, street lights, electric poles and water sources, along with monitoring of water bodies through an integrated digital platform.Soren directed the officials to ensure completion within the stipulated timeline without compromising on quality. “This initiative will bring scientific planning and enhance transparency and accountability in urban management,” he said.He also emphasised leveraging GIS for revenue augmentation, better asset management and improved delivery of civic services.Officials said the pilot findings will be analysed before scaling up the system across other urban bodies in a phased manner.
