Garhwa man drowns in PTR’s Sugga Bandh waterfall

Daltonganj: A 25-year-old tourist from Garhwa district drowned in the Sugga Bandh waterfall under the Bareysanr range of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Latehar district, officials said on Monday.The deceased was identified as Ayush Tiwary, a technocrat posted outside Jharkhand who was working from home for the past several weeks, forester (in-charge) Saket Pandey said.Sources in the PTR said, “Tiwary visited the waterfall with three friends on Sunday. The incident occurred around 3 pm when he jumped into the plunge pool at the base of the waterfall. One of his friends attempted to rescue him but nearly met the same fate before being pulled out of the turbulent waters by locals.”A member of the Eco Development Committee alerted forest officials about the incident. PTR’s quick response team reached the site and retrieved the body.PTR deputy director (South Division) Kumar Ashish said, “We keep telling tourists to follow safety guidelines on all occasions, but they don’t pay heed to our advice.”Officer in-charge of the Bareysanr police station Shashi P said, “A case of unnatural death has been registered.”
