MU lacks full-fledged computer science dept

Gaya: At a time when the govt is expanding computer education at the middle, secondary and senior secondary levels, Magadh University (MU) is still waiting for a full-fledged computer science department.MU coordinator of college development council (CCDC) Sanjay Kumar Tiwari, a senior teacher in the mathematics department who also holds additional charge as director of computer science education, said, “Gaya College, a constituent unit of MU, became the first institution under the university to introduce the master of computer applications (MCA) programme in 2004 after receiving academic approval from the All India Council for Technical Education. However, the proposal for setting up a dedicated department of computer science and creating permanent teaching posts has remained pending with the state higher education department.”He added, “Following the launch of the MCA programme at Gaya College in 2004, Sachchidanand Sinha College, Aurangabad, another constituent college of MU, introduced the same programme in 2009. Over the years, several students who completed their MCA from Magadh University have secured placements at reputed universities and institutions across the country.”Around 30 scholars are currently pursuing PhD research in computer science. In the absence of permanent faculty members, they are being guided by teachers from allied departments.The chancellor’s office has directed universities to implement the Samarth portal for admissions and other academic and administrative functions. However, the absence of permanent computer science faculty has slowed its effective implementation at MU.
