96.6 mm rainfall in Dum Dum, 28 mm in Alipore, rain set to intensify over Sun & Mon

Kolkata: Overnight rain that extended till Friday kept the mercury well below the normal mark in Kolkata. While Alipore recorded 28 mm of rainfall between Thursday and Friday evening, Dum Dum recorded a whopping 96.6 mm of rainfall during the same period. The Met office said there is more rain in store with the possibility of the intensity and frequency going up between Sunday and Monday.On Friday the maximum temperature dipped to the lowest in more than two months in Kolkata. Incessant rain though Thursday night, a cloudy sky and intermittent showers on Friday pulled the maximum temperature down to 28.6°C. At 4.2 notches below normal, it was the lowest for the city since April 30. With Kolkata recording a minimum temperature of 26.8°C, the difference between the two parameters was only 1.8 notches on Friday.“We can expect some amount of rain daily for the next three-four days. While we are likely to get light to moderate spells of rain on Saturday there is a possibility of more intensified rain between Sunday and Monday, with some heavy spells,” said Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata head H R Biswas.The monsoon trough, along with a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh, had triggered the night-long rain. On Friday, the trough oscillated, moving northwards. Met officials said this trough will again oscillate between Sunday and Monday, to a position that is favourable for South Bengal to get more rain. In addition, the Bay of Bengal is also feeding the city with adequate moisture due to the favourable wind pattern.The rain left stretches of VIP Road, near Kaikhali, under knee-deep water.Salt Lake recorded 54.5 mm rainfall while Barrackpore logged 58 mm. “We had predicted heavy rain for parts of North 24 Parganas. The northern fringes, like Dum Dum and Barrackpore logged a higher rain amount than Kolkata and the southern fringes,” Biswas said.With some amount of rain every day, the city’s mercury has been at a comfortable mark since the beginning of July. The maximum has also been below normal mark over the past six days.
