NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal district police have arrested a DMK youth wing organizer on charges of illegally mining sand from the Cauvery river.Acting on reports of illegal sand mining, Paramathi Velur inspector Uma Shankar and his team conducted vehicle checks near the Velur check-post around 1.30am on Saturday.They intercepted a minitruck carrying 40 bags of sand. “The vehicle was driven by K Dinesh, 27, a DMK youth wing organizer in Paramathi Velur,” the inspector said, adding that he was arrested. Police seized the sand-laden minitruck and a two-wheeler.Police said Dinesh had been repeatedly involved in sand theft. Locals and social activists have urged police to take strict action against others engaged in similar illegal sand mining activities in the Cauvery river.
