Bokaro: Two days after a deer died in an open well at Harnad village in Kasmar, the district administration has decided to identify and secure hazardous wells in rural and forest-fringe areas.A sub-adult elephant also died after falling into a deep well at Gopo village in Gomia block in 2025 while reportedly moving through the area in search of food.Deputy commissioner Ajay Nath Jha on Monday appealed to the residents to cover, fence or protect open wells, particularly those located along animal movement corridors. He said, “Wild animals often move through villages at night to avoid noise and human activity and may inadvertently fall into unprotected wells.”Jha said, “Such incidents underscore the need for greater sensitivity towards wildlife habitats and movement routes. Even simple safety measures such as a boundary wall, fencing or a secure cover over a well could prevent avoidable deaths. The district administration will soon conduct surveys of uncovered wells in vulnerable locations, especially in Gomia and Petarwar, and take steps to make them safe.”
