Jamshedpur: A constable posted at Golmuri Police Line attempted to die by suicide by climbing a watch tower under Sitaramdera police station limits on Wednesday.The constable, identified as Babu Lal (28), was reportedly under severe mental stress due to prolonged financial hardship and family-related problems. Lal was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he climbed the tower.On receiving information about the incident, personnel from the local police station, along with his colleagues from the police line, rushed to the spot. After prolonged counselling and persuasion, they convinced him to climb down, averting a major tragedy.Lal alleged that he had not received his salary for the past two months, leaving him unable to support his family.“On one hand, I have not received my salary for two months, and on the other, I am under constant pressure from banks over the EMIs for the loan I had taken. I am unable to manage my household expenses,” Lal said.The constable was later taken for a medical examination. Preliminary findings suggested that he was suffering from severe mental distress. Sitaramdera police station officer in-charge Anand Mishra said that he was not fully aware of the details but that they had initiated an inquiry.
