Patna: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna has successfully performed its first living donor liver transplant (LDLT). The procedure was carried out by the department of surgical gastroenterology. The recipient, a 54-year-old Patna resident suffering from autoimmune hepatitis, had developed end-stage liver disease, making transplantation the only definitive treatment option. His wife donated a portion of her healthy liver after both underwent extensive investigations and pre-operative evaluation to ensure their fitness and suitability for the procedure. The liver transplant progamme has been developed under the leadership of Dr Utpal Anand, head of the department of surgical gastroenterology, with Dr Kunal Paras, Dr Basant Narayan Singh and Dr Kislay Kant serving as key faculty members.Describing the procedure as one of the most complex in modern surgery, Dr Anand said it involves two major operations performed simultaneously, requiring meticulous reconstruction of blood vessels and bile ducts, along with coordinated preoperative and postoperative care. The transplant was performed in collaboration with the Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences (CLBS), led by Dr Subhash Gupta.AIIMS-Patna had earlier achieved another landmark by performing Bihar’s first deceased donor liver transplant (DDLT). Officials said the successful LDLT further strengthens the institute’s position as a centre for advanced liver and hepatobiliary care for patients from Bihar and neighbouring states. The programme was established with the support of AIIMS-Patna executive director Prof (Brig.) Raju Agarwal.
