Ganesh idol topples over speed breaker in Mumbai, 2 suffer minor injuries

Mumbai: A 12ft-tall Ganesh idol being transported from Vidyavihar to Dharavi toppled and disintegrated near Sheetal Talao on LBS Road in Kurla (W) on Tuesday night, leaving two people with minor injuries. The idol collapsed after the cart bearing it stumbled over a speed breaker.Following the incident, mandal authorities immersed the idol in Sheetal Talao. The two injured persons were identified as Santosh Jaiswal (28) and Rohit Jaiswal (25). Santosh was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital, while Rohit was led to Habib Hospital. Both received treatment and were subsequently discharged.Vinoba Bhave Nagar police said the idol belonging to Om Shakti Mitra Mandal from Dharavi suffered the mishap. Both men received minor injuries on the head and were discharged after treatment.Congress corporator Ashraf Azmi said the idol was being transported to Dharavi from a workshop in Ghatkopar when the incident occurred near Sheetal Talkies. Azmi reiterated that the [vehicle carrying the] idol came in contact with a speed breaker, causing it to lose balance.The incident comes two weeks after a nearly two-tonne, 27ft-tall idol of Bhuleshwar Cha Raja toppled during its arrival ceremony on Aug 22, crushing two members of the Ganesh mandal to death. The incident occurred around 300m from the site where the idol was scheduled to be installed.
