Birth, death cert applicants rue delays

Ranchi: More than 700 birth certificate applications and over 200 death certificate applications are pending with the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), leading to delays in the issuance of certificates and forcing applicants to make repeated visits to the civic body’s office.Officials said around 250 birth certificate applications are awaiting approval at the sub-divisional officer (SDO) level, while over 200 death certificate applications have remained pending for nearly a month. The delays have caused inconvenience to residents, particularly those seeking corrections in already-issued certificates. Birendra Mahato, a resident of Tamar, said he has been visiting the RMC office for the past two months to rectify an error in his seven-year-old son’s birth certificate.“The certificate had already been issued, but my son’s name was entered incorrectly. We have been making repeated trips to the office with the family just to get the name corrected,” he said.According to RMC officials, the backlog has accumulated due to the registrar’s engagement in Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-related duties. As a result, disposal of pending applications has slowed significantly.Several applicants questioned why alternative arrangements were not made for certificate-related work. Reema Tudu, who was waiting at the civic body office, said residents were bearing the brunt of the administrative delay.“If the registrar has been assigned SIR work, then who will carry out the registrar’s responsibilities? People are being forced to keep coming here because their applications are not being cleared,” she said.Deputy municipal commissioner Ravindra Kumar acknowledged the issue and said the matter would be reviewed. “These works will be managed alongside other official responsibilities. I will personally examine where the applications are pending and ensure necessary action is taken,” he said.
