GARHWA: An 18-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling of a room at her in-laws’ house in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district, police said on Tuesday.Her 25-year-old husband was arrested after her mother filed a complaint alleging that she was beaten and then hanged, a senior police officer said.The woman, identified as Nehanshi Kumari, was found hanging with a ‘dupatta’ (scarf) inside her in-laws’ house in Narkhoriya village under the Nagar Untari police station area on Monday evening, he said.Her husband, identified as Ravi Prasad, was arrested after the deceased’s mother, Phool Kumari, lodged a complaint against six members of his family, including his father, brothers and sister. A case under the BNS and the Dowry Prohibition Act was registered, Nagar Untari police station officer-in-charge Upendera Kumar said according to news agency PTI.“The deceased’s husband has been arrested and a manhunt launched to nab the remaining five persons, who are absconding,” he added.In her complaint, the deceased’s mother alleged that Prasad and his family had been harassing Nehanshi Kumari for dowry ever since her marriage five months ago. They allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh in cash, a motorcycle, a gold chain and a ring, another official said.When her parents expressed their inability to meet the demands, the accused allegedly beat her and hung her from the ceiling, causing her immediate death, he said.The body was handed over to her parents after a post-mortem examination on Tuesday.
