Ranchi: A 24-year-old MSc student of BIT Mesra was found dead in her hostel room on the institute’s campus on Friday night, police said. The student, identified as Anjali Suman, was a native of Godda district.Police said Anjali returned to her room after attending classes in the evening. When she did not respond to the hostel’s attendance call, officials became suspicious. They checked the room through the keyhole and found her hanging from the ceiling fan before informing the police.A team from the BIT police outpost reached the campus and began an investigation. No suicide note was found, police said. Other hostel residents were questioned, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.BIT police outpost officer in-charge Ajay Kumar Das said a diary had been recovered from the room. Its entries indicated that Anjali had been under emotional distress related to family circumstances, including the recent death of her mother and her father’s remarriage. “Police will investigate the matter from all angles to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her death,” Das said.BIT Mesra management said the institute has a support system for students facing mental health concerns. It said a psychiatrist is available for counselling and that mentors are assigned to students.
