Kolkata: Mamata Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad was questioned on Tuesday for over five hours by CID in an extortion case.The Burdwan-Durgapur MP has been accused of threatening a businessman, demanding extortion money, and hatching a criminal conspiracy.“False and politically driven allegations have been made against me. The complainant referred to May 21, but I had already left for Delhi on May 19. So who was in my house on the 21st to collect money?” asked Azad after the questioning, adding that he would cooperate with the investigation.According to the complaint, on May 21, 2025, Azad allegedly sought Rs 15 lakh from a Raniganj-based gas supplier. The businessman filed an extortion case and submitted an audio recording.Earlier, Justice Kaushik Chanda of Calcutta High Court had restrained investigators from arresting Azad for six months.He was summoned to Bhawani Bhavan around noon on Tuesday and arrived 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
