Birding camp marks start of wildlife week in Ranchi
The session introduced the students to bird habitats and the need to protect wetlands

Ranchi: The call of birds replaced the classroom bell for around 60 students at Getalsud dam on Saturday, as the forest department launched Wildlife Week with a bird-watching camp.Accompanied by about 25 volunteers and forest officials, the students explored the reservoir and observed painted storks, little grebes and little egrets, among other species. The session also introduced them to bird habitats and the need to protect wetlands.S R Natesha, chief conservator of forests (wildlife), said field-based activities helped children build a direct connection with nature. “When children observe birds and their habitats closely, they develop an understanding of why these ecosystems need to be protected,” he said.Ravi Ranjan, principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) and chief wildlife warden, said the camp sought to broaden the understanding of wildlife conservation beyond tigers and elephants.“Conservation is not only about protecting tigers and elephants. It is equally important to notice and protect smaller forms of life, as habitat loss, pollution and other human-induced changes increasingly affect them,” he said.Officials said the department would organise awareness and conservation activities for students and the public during the observance, with a focus on encouraging younger participants to understand wildlife and ecological balance.
