South Kolkata school plans to launch counselling after classroom stabbing

Kolkata: A reputed private school near Gariahat, where a class 9 student was severely injured by a classmate, is stepping up counselling for students and teachers to prevent a recurrence. On Monday, parents from several classes met the authorities to voice concerns over safety on campus.A South Point official said, “We are planning to bring in a qualified professional to conduct engaging sessions and resource learning. However, this will take some time. This is not a one-time programme. We need to hold such sessions frequently to sensitise students across different age groups.”A parent of a class 8 student said: “We are deeply concerned about the safety and security of our children, but at the same time, we are satisfied with the school’s timely intervention and how it handled the situation. During today’s meeting, the school management assured us that they would start counseling sessions for both students and teachers.”Another parent added, “We raised concerns about incidents of bullying and physical assault reported in the recent past, and the school authority assured us they would monitor these matters closely to prevent them in the future. We also requested life-skills classes for adolescents. They informed us that they are setting up a dedicated lab for life-skills training at the new campus, where the school is expected to relocate next year.”A senior school official said the meeting was positive and parents were satisfied with the prompt action after the incident. The injured class 9 student is recovering and undergoing regular wound care, and is expected to return after the Puja vacation. The other student, now under suspension, is undergoing counselling. His future at the school will depend on the police investigation.
