Jamshedpur: Senior officers, scientists, engineers, technical personnel and other employees of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) celebrated the PSU’s diamond jubilee in Jaduguda on Sunday.Under Department of Atomic Energy, the PSU marked six decades of uranium mining and processing capabilities. On the occasion, UCIL officials pledged to expand its existing mines and develop new uranium mining projects in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. It is also exploring recovery of uranium from copper tailings of Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL).The push comes at a time when the country is aiming to create 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047.“Under the goal of a developed India by 2047, a target has been set to produce 100 GW of nuclear energy. To achieve this target, adequate availability and production of uranium will be essential,” UCIL chairman-cum-managing director K Anand Rao said.Established in 1967, UCIL has played a key role in building India’s uranium mining and processing base, while advancing mining technology, ore processing, safety, radiation protection and environmental management standards. The milestone also highlighted UCIL’s continuing responsibility in supporting India’s long-term energy security goals.
