Delhi Police is analyzing videos to identify officers who faced assaults during the Congress protest

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police is analysing videos shot on mobile phones to identify police personnel, including women officers and constables, who were allegedly assaulted during the Congress protest near Jantar Mantar, with an FIR likely to be registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to assault on public servants, obstructing them in the discharge of their duties and other relevant offences, sources said.Police are examining the footage to establish the sequence of events and identify those allegedly involved in assaulting personnel deployed for crowd management.

Delhi Police probes videos of alleged assault on cops

The videos are being scrutinised as part of the police’s investigation into the alleged attacks on personnel during the protest.The FIR is expected to invoke provisions dealing with assault or criminal force against public servants and obstruction of public servants while they are performing their duties.The development comes amid a series of confrontations between police and protesters during demonstrations in central Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Women cops, senior officers face allegations amid protest clashes

Delhi Police had recently highlighted the alleged difficulties faced by women personnel deployed at protest sites, with a senior officer claiming that women cops had been dragged, pushed and manhandled while trying to control crowds.The force has also equipped frontline personnel deployed at protest sites in the New Delhi area with body-worn cameras amid allegations of police misconduct and manhandling during recent protests.The cameras are intended to provide a real-time record of interactions between officers and protesters.

Protests over Gyanesh Kumar see repeated clashes

The latest development comes amid continuing protests seeking the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police had earlier registered three FIRs over demonstrations demanding his resignation, though no individual or organisation was named as an accused in those cases.The protests have also triggered complaints against police personnel. Three women journalists alleged sexual harassment by police during a protest, following which their complaints were transferred to the Crime Branch at Kamla Market for further action.The police are now examining the latest set of videos to identify those allegedly involved in the assault on personnel and determine the applicable charges.(With agency inputs)
