AI debuts in exam evaluation in Kolkata schools, boosts admin work

Kolkata: Schools in the city are adopting artificial intelligence to check answer scripts, tabulate results, analyse performance and streamline administrative work. The Newtown School introduced AI-assisted answer-script evaluation for classes 9 and 11 in June. The system, being used for the first time by the school, will be deployed in all future exams of these two classes, with plans to expand it to other grades later.Ruby Park Public School, too, is using AI tools to help teachers in script evaluation and result tabulation.Among the other schools that have embraced AI for various academic and administrative work are Sri Sri Academy and St Augustine’s Day School, Shyamnagar. The use of technology in the evaluation process by CBSE for this year’s class 12 exams had triggered controversy, with the on-screen evaluation system leading to discrepancies in assessment. Many examinees reported their scores changed after re-evaluation.In the AI-assisted evaluation system, the answer scripts are scanned and uploaded for assessment. After the initial checking, the scripts are sent to teachers for final verification. The system also generates detailed analysis of each student’s performance.Satabdi Bhattacharjee, principal of The Newtown School, said, “The (AI-based) system has been introduced to ensure a more detailed review of answer scripts and to provide deeper insight into their learning and academic performance. The objective is not merely to evaluate students through marks but to better understand their learning patterns and provide meaningful feedback that supports continuous growth... We aim to create a more personalised and effective learning experience for every student.”Ruby Park Public School principal Mousumi Mohapatra said AI tools ensure greater speed, consistency and accuracy in evaluation. “Every evaluation, however, is supervised by our faculty,” she said.Rodney Borneo, principal of St Augustine’s Day School, Shyamnagar, which has adopted an AI-based tabulation and interpretation system, said, “I have found AI to be an invaluable aid to school administration work, particularly data tabulation and interpretation. It enables me to organise large volumes of academic and administrative data efficiently, identify trends in student performance and monitor attendance patterns.Gargi Banerjee, principal of Sri Sri Academy, said, “AI supports our academic and administrative processes through assessment analysis, result tabulation and data-driven decision-making.”DPS Newtown principal Ambica Mehra said the school is using technology for tabulation and preparing report cards. Administrative work is now easier and teachers can spend more time on teaching and student engagement.
