Patna: A doctor at Mohania Sub-Divisional Hospital in Kaimur district was allegedly dragged out of his chamber and assaulted after declaring a road accident victim dead late on Monday night, triggering protests by the medical fraternity and suspension of OPD services for nearly two-and-a-half hours on Tuesday. The deceased, Gufran Khan (40) of Naughara village, was critically injured after being allegedly hit by a speeding SUV near the Old Checkpost while waiting for a Ranchi-bound bus. He was rushed to the hospital, where attending physician Dr Pradeep Kumar declared him dead after examination.Following the declaration, the victim’s relatives and locals allegedly created a ruckus, accusing the doctor of failing to examine the patient properly. Refuting the allegation, Dr Kumar said he had conducted a thorough examination and maintained that CCTV footage would establish the facts. He alleged that he was dragged out of his chamber and assaulted despite repeatedly explaining that the victim had died before treatment could begin. Doctors also claimed the assault took place in the presence of police personnel. The hospital administration lodged a police complaint, while a heavy police contingent later restored order. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bhabhua branch, condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the entire medical fraternity, and demanded that case be lodged against the accused be booked under the Bihar Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act. OPD services resumed on Tuesday only after the SDM assured doctors that those responsible would be identified and legal action initiated within 24 hours.
