Ara: For two days, a man from a quiet Bhojpur village held the police at bay, challenged them openly on social media, pointed a pistol at officers, fired repeatedly and taunted them in videos that soon went viral.The stand off ended on Wednesday when Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, around 30 years, died during treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) after sustaining bullet injuries in both legs in an exchange of fire with police and the Special Task Force (STF).Tiwari, son of Kasinath Tiwari and a resident of Bilauti village under Shahpur police station area in Bhojpur district, had become the centre of attention after videos surfaced showing him confronting police personnel outside his house under construction.According to a press release issued by the Bhojpur SP’s office on Wednesday evening, police received information around 9am that Tiwari was moving around with a pistol, firing in the air and posing a threat to public safety.The release stated that a police team, accompanied by STF personnel, rushed to Bilauti village and repeatedly asked him to surrender. However, he allegedly continued firing intermittently at the police.“On June 17, 2026, at about 9am, Bhojpur police were informed about a man named Bharat Bhushan Tiwari who was reportedly brandishing a pistol and firing in the air, posing a grave threat to public life and property. When a police team along with the Bhojpur STF reached Bilauti village and repeatedly asked him to surrender, he continued to fire intermittently at the police with the pistol in his hand. It posed a serious danger to the lives and property of both the public and the police,” the press release said.Police said STF personnel wearing bulletproof jackets subsequently cordoned off the accused in an attempt to bring him under control. According to the release, Tiwari then opened fire targeting the police team.“For the safety of the public and in self-defence, the police resorted to firing, in which the accused sustained bullet injuries in his legs,” the release stated.He was taken for treatment but later died at the PMCH.Police also said they seized the pistol allegedly used by Tiwari during the firing. Two live cartridges, two empty cartridges and a magazine were recovered from his possession.The dramatic confrontation had begun drawing widespread attention on Tuesday evening when a seven-minute viral video showed Tiwari standing at his house under construction, pointing a pistol towards police personnel and issuing threats.“Thok denge tum sab ko” (I will shoot all of you), he was heard saying in the video.The footage showed police personnel exercising restraint and repeatedly trying to persuade him to surrender both himself and his weapon. But he refused to back down.The situation escalated further on Wednesday morning when Tiwari went live on social media during the stand off and allegedly fired at least two rounds towards the police. In the broadcast, he portrayed his actions as a form of sacrifice and appeared almost defiant in the face of the massive police deployment around him.“Ye balidan mera desh ke liye bekar nahi jayega” (This sacrifice of mine will not go in vain for the country), he said. “Mujhe maro… le jao lekin yuddh ladne ka ek alag hi maza hai” (Shoot me… take me away, but there is a different thrill in fighting a battle), he said.“Dekho main akela hoon aur ye sab itne police wale bulletproof jacket pahan ke mujhe pakadne aaye hain” (Look, I am alone and all these policemen wearing bulletproof jackets have come to arrest me), he added.The episode has also raised questions about the man’s mental condition. On Tuesday night, the Bhojpur police had issued a press release stating that Tiwari was living with a mental health condition. However, in Wednesday’s release, police said the focus was on his actions as an accused who allegedly posed a grave threat to both the public and police personnel.The incident also found mention in CM Samrat Choudhary’s speech on Wednesday. Referring to the viral video, he said he was disturbed by the sight of a man openly threatening Bihar Police personnel.“I had been worried since yesterday to see that a man was threatening our own state’s police. Let me make it crystal clear, those who are criminals will be dealt with very sternly and the criminals will have no option but to leave the state,” the CM said.Notably, the CM had made a similar assertion just two days earlier while addressing a foundation-laying ceremony in Bhojpur.“The criminals who dare to challenge our police will be dealt with sternly within 48 hours and will have to leave Bihar,” he had said.
