Ranchi: After a month of criss-crossing remote villages, urban neighbourhoods, and apartment complexes to conduct door-to-door verification of voters, booth level officers (BLOs) across Jharkhand wrapped up the enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on Wednesday.While the completion of the physically demanding exercise brought a sense of relief, BLOs admitted they were anxious about the next phase, fearing they could face backlash from voters if names are missing from the draft electoral rolls to be published on August 5.City-based BLO and school teacher, Abhya Jha, said, ”It was a very tiring exercise. I was on the field every day, visiting numerous houses. I interacted with my students, which I missed the most over the past month.”“The real challenge could begin after the draft rolls are published on Aug 5. If someone’s name is not included or someone’s name is misspelled, the first person they will approach is the BLO,” he further said.Echoing Jha’s concern, BLO Ravi Shekhar said, “Many cases were reported during the enumeration phase, in which voters’ surnames appeared different when compared to the 2003 voter list. If such voters are mapped, the system will show the voter as two persons and if that lead to exclusion from the draft, the BLOs will have to suffer.”In East Singhbhum’s Potka block, BLO Salkhu Mardi said, “Potka has reported malaria cases, including fatalities. I had 1,100 forms. All have been returned to me till Wednesday and 100% digitisation has also been achieved. Poor roads, infrastructure, and network connectivity were major issues for me during my duty in remote villages. I had to sit at Panchayat office for hours for digitisation of forms.”State chief electoral officer (CEO) K. Ravi Kumar on Thursday said that during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state, a list of 70,62,319 unmapped voters was published at all polling stations on May 23.“Following an intensive verification campaign, the number of unmapped voters was reduced to 47, 42,505 before the commencement of the enumeration phase on July 29. During the enumeration phase, BLOs, with the assistance of voters, Booth Level Agents (BLA-2), and volunteers, carried out extensive mapping of voters with the electoral rolls from the previous SIR. As a result, only 14,02,262 voters, accounting for 5.3% of the electorate, remain in the unmapped category,” the CEO added.
