Patna: The city may get its first waste-to-wonder theme park by next month, with construction work now 90% complete. Built entirely out of scrap, the park will showcase Bihar’s history and culture while spreading a message of waste management and environmental awareness.The project, named ‘Dr Rajendra Prasad–Bihar Gaurav Park’, is being developed by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (Buidco) on about 10 acres of land between J P Ganga Path and Rajendra Prasad’s memorial site at an estimated cost of Rs15 crore. Former chief minister Nitish Kumar laid its foundation stone in Aug 2025. Buidco has set a target of inaugurating the park by Aug 15, officials said.Officials said most of the sculptures and artworks are ready and are being installed. The park will feature 38 types of artworks, including replicas of Bihar’s famous monuments, paintings, statues and animals. Among the highlights are replicas of the Nalanda and Vikramshila stupas.Visitors will also be able to view giant scrap-metal statues of historical figures, including Emperor Ashoka, Chanakya, Aryabhatta and Dashrath Manjhi. All the artwork has been created from waste materials brought from Delhi, including tyres, bangles, broken pipes, electronic waste, bottles and metal scrap.Buidco spokesperson Shweta Bhaskar said, “Artists from Gujarat are creating the scrap sculptures, while artisans from Odisha are making the statues. We are trying to complete the remaining work so that the park can be inaugurated on the occasion of Independence Day.”To reflect Bihar’s traditional art forms, the park’s walls and food court will be decorated with Madhubani, Manjusha, Tikuli and Sujni art. The park will also have three separate zones — one each for children, adults and youngsters.With civil work nearing completion, work on lighting and landscaping has begun. Special warm lights sourced from Delhi, on the lines of the illumination in Prayagraj, will be installed. The 11-storey replica of the Mahabodhi Temple will receive special lighting to make it stand out at night.Streetlights and high-mast lights will also be installed across the park. For landscaping, several new plant species, not seen before in Patna, will be introduced.Officials said some sculptures could not be installed earlier because of delays in civil construction. They will be placed once the remaining work is completed.“The main objective of the park is to turn waste into art, promote the Swachh Bharat Mission and spread awareness about proper waste disposal. It is also expected to become a new tourist attraction in Patna,” the Buidco spokesperson added.
