Chatra: The Chatra district administration has expedited efforts to establish a degree college between Hunterganj and Kunda blocks, an area once known for left-wing extremism.Deputy commissioner Ravi Anand has directed officials of both the blocks to identify and facilitate the transfer of land suitable for the proposed institution. The initiative is being undertaken in accordance with instructions issued by the state higher and technical education department.Officials said that around 10 acres would be required for construction of the college. The DC said that the project is on their priority list. “The land selection process will be completed soon, after which further action will be initiated,” he added. The proposed college is expected to bring higher education within easier reach of students from remote villages, many of whom currently have to travel long distances or discontinue their studies after school due to financial constraints. Students often move to Gaya in Bihar, Hazaribag, Chatra town or other urban centres for higher education, adding to the economic burden on families.Locals have welcomed the move, saying the institution could become a catalyst for social and economic transformation in the region. A resident of Kunda block, Subodh Kumar, who is presently studying in a college in adjoining Hazaribag district, welcomed the decision. “The new college will enable students to study in their own area, which will save both time and money for them,” he said. The Hunterganj-Kunda belt was affected by Maoist activities for decades, slowing development and the implementation of welfare schemes. Sustained security operations over the years, however, have significantly weakened extremist influence, paving the way for greater investment in education and infrastructure.
